Horsham Golf Course
Smarter Golf Energy saves golf clubs 20% on their energy
Located in the picturesque market town of Horsham, Horsham Golf Club is one of the most popular golfing destinations in West Sussex, thanks to its easy access off the A24.
The course boasts 18 holes at its Oaks Course, as well as nine holes around the First Course, which is ideal for families and those new to the game. It has one of the leading practice facilities in the region, with an 18-bay, heated, floodlit driving range, a short game area and putting greens. There is also a team of friendly and dedicated coaches on site.
The club also offers a golf shop, a well-equipped gym, and the popular Woody’s Cafe Bar, which caters for members as well as corporate events and private parties.
Horsham’s ‘sister’ club is Horne Park, just a short drive from the M23/M25 and the A22. This beautiful, 9-hole course in rural Surrey has played host to many top local professionals. Like many golf businesses, these golf clubs were finding that energy costs were rising year on year and becoming a major outlay.
Golf club operator Neil Burke says: “Our energy costs had essentially quadrupled since we bought the business in 2003, becoming a major overhead. We knew we needed to be proactive in finding the most relevant providers for our gas, electricity and water, but that was easier said than done; searching the market for the best deal was hugely complicated and time-consuming.”
As an offcial partner to the PGA, Smarter Golf Energy understands just how energy-intensive it can be to run a golf course. Saving money on energy will thus help your golf business become more profitable and remain competitive. That’s why Neil asked us to help him search the market to find the most competitive energy prices for his golf clubs.
Simon Rand from Smarter Golf Energy says: “We appreciate that researching suppliers can be tedious. Neil, like many other golf club operators, was too busy running his businesses to spend hours trawling the market – that’s where we come in.”
Smarter Golf Energy search the water market and dozens of energy suppliers to find your golf club the best utility prices. Golf club owners often fall into the trap of simply remaining with their current provider because it’s easier to do so – but that could mean missing out on thousands of pounds in savings.
“I have used Smarter Golf Energy for many years and have every confidence in their abilities to find the best deal for the golf clubs based on their expertise and knowledge of the market,” says Neil, “they are really clued up when it comes to what is going on in the energy market and when and where the price hikes are going to come. It’s knowledge I simply don’t have.”
Neil says that by allowing Smarter Golf Energy to review and audit their existing energy contracts, he is confident that his energy costs are as competitive as they can be: “I just don’t have the time to do this type of review. That’s why it’s great to be able to rely on the expertise of Smarter Golf Energy.”
The golf clubs’ latest energy review in January 2018 resulted in a significant 20% saving on his current energy bills. This is money that can now be invested elsewhere in the business.
“With third-party (non-commodity and industry charges) generally set to rise in the coming years, suppliers will, of course, pass these increases on to customers,” says Simon, “Therefore, it makes business sense to make sure you have an impartial third party like Smarter Golf Energy to manage your energy contracts for you.”
On the advice of Smarter Golf Energy, Neil and his team have also saved money by replacing standard lights with LED lights in the public areas and avoiding using their expensive storage heaters when they can. The savings these small changes have afforded him has allowed him to invest in a new heating/cooling air conditioning unit for the bar at Horsham Park.
Neil adds: “As responsible businesses we want our golf clubs to use all energy effciently and reducing the use of energy also reduces cost. Smarter Golf Energy offered a comprehensive service, and as experts in our industry, I was confident we were in good hands. Now we are working with them on a comprehensive audit, and hope that once it’s completed, we will have a detailed review of our energy use allowing us to save even more money.”
Smarter Golf Energy offers numerous services to golf courses, which can range from shopping the energy market to find the most competitive quote to free desktop energy audits and more comprehensive audits which involve specialist equipment and resources. Talk to us about how we can help you.
